Recommendations_TA1

Once you logged into MarkUs as an Instructor, you will see 3 main tabs- Dashboard, Assignments, Users. Under the Assignments tab, click Create New

A new page “Create a New Assignment” will be displayed. You have to complete four sections to post the Assignment to students. All sections appear on a single page but here they are divided into 4 screenshots for explanation.

1. Assignment Properties

• *Give Short Identifier and Title to your Assignment.
• Give Message which includes Instructions or Description for the Assignment.
• *Decide on Due Date and enter the date and time by clicking on calendar icon. Due date will be the last day for Submitting the Assignment by students.

2. Submitted Files

• *By Default, name of the Repository Folder will be Short Identifier’s name but you can change if needed. Repository Folder will contain the files submitted by students for this Assignment.
• When you click on Add a Required File, a text box will appear to enter the Filename. Required files are the files that students should submit. If you want to add another file click again on Add a Required File. To remove any file, just click Remove link that appears for every added file.

3. Assignment Type

In this section, you will-

• Set Assignment Type-Individual or Group work. Select the first checkbox that says “Student can work in groups” if you want to allow students to work in groups.

• Select the checkbox “Allow Student to form their own group” if you want students to form their groups as per the Group Limit you will set next. Group Size must be 1 or more people.

• Select the last checkbox that says “Group’s name autogenerated” to create group’s name automatically and save your time.

4. Submission Rules

In last section, you will choose the penalty rules for submitting the Assignment. You can choose only one option-

• Select “Accept No Late Submissions”- After due date no late submission will be allowed (Default).

• Select “Automatically deduct grace period credits” and click Add a Grace Period. It allows you to set the grace period and after grace period limit, grace period credits will be deducted. You can remove the set criterion if you want to enter different rules for grace period by clicking on Remove

• Select “Use Penalty Period” and click Add a Penalty Period, It allows you to set the Penalty period and once penalty period has passed, points will be deducted as per the percentage set in deduction. You can remove the set criterion if you want to enter different rules for the penalty period by clicking on Remove.

Lastly, click Submit to post the Assignment to students.

Click again on main tab-Assignments to check if the newly created Assignment is listed in the Current Assignments list.

Dennis

He is 24 years old, second year Computer Science undergraduate student at University of Waterloo, Canada. He has moved from Vancouver and has interest in new technologies. He has registered for 12 credits and works part time for 10 hours a week to support himself for school.  

Each week, Dennis spends some time in creating a to-do list and then works accordingly. He spends most of his time working on Assignments and don’t want to lose any points. Dennis wants to keep track of his progress and expects to get a detailed feedback with suggestions from his Instructor with specific comments on code to improve his skills. He wishes to be able to get feedback on draft version before the final submission.

 Currently, he receives an Assignment as attachment in his mailbox. He has to read the attachment carefully to remember the instructions. Instead of looking at email again, he wants to keep details of Assignment handy so that he can refer back while working on the submission.

 If instructor allows him to work in a group, Dennis sends an email to some of his friends but he gets frustrated when he has to wait for too long to get their reply. He wishes to have an online system to solve the group formation and assignment management problem. Dennis has three group projects going on this semester and finds difficult to create a group. He wishes to create a group by sending an invitation and know quickly that with whom he can create the group.  He wants to reuse the same group in his other classes.

Dennis submits the required files by emailing to the instructor and checks for files several times before submitting the assignment. He thinks that communication is most important in forming a good group but sometimes Dennis group end up submitting wrong version of file and hates to get penalized for it.

Goals

• To remain in top 5 % of students in class.
